Talking Colour/ Talking Pattern- Lily Brooke-Taylor
Colour

A series of eight quick three minuite sketches of a pond in Vietnam using oil pastels. 2 X 4 mini sketches on A5
Splodgy, childish, playful, cohesive, scribbles

Ink and fine liner on A3. The fluidity of the finaliser and its ever-growing lines is successful at bringing together the two separate ink drawings as one piece.
Busy, ever-growing, playful, natural

Cut outs of coloured paper placed together inspired by landscapes surrounding a waterfall in Laos, A4
Clean, slick, precise, considered, wobbly

Continuation of coloured paper cut out and stuck down, A3. Here I layered acetate over the top and traced down the fluid shapes I’d cut out using a white tipex pen. I think the simplicity of this is effective at creating a clean yet striking composition.
Clean, fluid, mirrored, simple

A series of eight two minuite sketches onto coloured paper using charchoal, entire piece is A3. After completing the initial sketches I taped down a sheet of acetate over the drawings and drew out further shapes found in nature using a tipex pen.
Layered, organic, playful, experimental

Quick sketches using different media layered upon one another; Pink felt tip: 10 seconds, blue oil pastel: 20 seconds, tipex pen over acetate open time. Entire piece is A3.
Fun, playful, experimental, layered, childlike, colourful, exciting, exuberant

Mixed media drawings using felt tips, fineliners, acetate and tipex pens. 2 X A5
Playful, organic, fun, patterned, scribbles, stripy, exciting, busy, chaotic

Oil pastel mark making on paper, A3
Based this off of a lanndscape where the colours were predominantley green and brown however decided to change the colours as I’d already used lots of green and blue in my previous drawings.
Expressive, fun, fireworks, movement, dynamic

Oil pastel mark making, A3. Similar to my previous drawing however I chose to make it more simple and stripped back by using only one colour. I think this makes it more striking and bold.
Striking, expressive, clear, bold

Oil pastels on green card, A4
Eye catching, vivid, bold, expressive

Series of three doodles/ sketches on A5.
Fun, exuberant, bubbly, chaotic, busy, fizzy, explosive, playful

Rice fields in Vietnam drawn with oil pastels on different paper/ card, A4.
Successful at translating the patterns within landscapes onto paper. I like how the oil pastels pick up some of the texture of the paper/ card in some places, adding further texture unintentionally.
Eye catching, colourful, vivid, buttery, striking

Colour tests and experimentation for the three oil pastel drawings before, exploring which colours worked cohesively.
Particularly love the interaction between the teal and gold; super bold and pops out so well.
Pattern

Vivid, chaotic, exuberant, bold, busy, clashing, explosive, fun, unrestrained

I love how the vibrancy of the yellow and pink engage with one another against the more muted background colour. Still bold and eye-catching like the images above, however this one is far less chaotic and busy, allowing the focus to be on the singular pink shape without interruption.
Speckled, grainy, clear

I really like how the different lines engage with one another. These feel full of movement and despite clearly being 2D digitally manipulated images, they seem tangible, reminding me of string/ threads.
Fluid, swirly, tangled, intertwined, flowing,

Repeat patterns made from prior manipulations above. For me these seem to regimented and organised, transporting something very fluid and free into something overly precise and controlled.
Organised, strict, symetrical, kaleidascope, repetitive

Here I took small sections of my drawings and placed them together to create a new pattern. I think these are successful at elevating the original drawings by taking out the strongest sections and organising them in a more considered way.
Organic, mossy, growing, holes, hanging

My favourite outcome for ‘Pattern’. I kept the colours from the original drawing, I love how they look together so felt no need to change them. Taking a fairly simple drawing and creating a repeat of it here creates something busy and fun yet not overwhelming or chaotic. The teal and gold shapes remind me of gemstones.
Interlocked, jagged, iridescent, precious

Draping, flowing, stripey

I like how the pattern flows naturally down the page. Where the pattern itself is busy, having lots of background space left over is effective at creating a striking image where there is an obvious focal point.
Microscopic, bold, scientific, striking
Personal Reflection
For this task I drew inspiration from my travels earlier in the year. I have hundreds of images which I had taken as textile references, rich in both with colour and texture. I took an exploratory approach towards ‘Talking Colour’ trailing out a range of media to not only create a variety of responses but also push myself to try new things such as quick response timed drawings and collage. My favourite outcomes are the oil pastel drawings of Vietnamese rice fields. Although I thought that the photographs I had taken were beautiful, they do not capture how breathtaking this scenery was in real life. Therefore, I utilised a rich, vivid colour pallete to amplify the shapes and patterns I drew. The bold use of colour was successful at creating striking imagery which encapsulates the wonder I experienced looking at these landscapes at the time. For ‘Talking Pattern’ I explored ways in which I could develop my drawings for ‘Talking Colour’ further. I took this as an opportunity to learn new digital skills on photoshop, as this is an area of design which I had not explored much of in the past and I wanted to learn new skills which would aid future projects. The learning process was successful; I learnt digital manipulation techniques which allowed me to create dynamic and playful outcomes. I enjoyed extracting different snippets and layering them upon one another to elevate them further and experiment with scale and composition.
Elain Chen: You have produced amazing drawings for both tasks and you have explored with a variety of techniques and vibrant colours…
