Talking Colour/Talking Pattern-Ainhoa Martinez
COLOUR

PATTERN

My drawings were based on colour and pattern , I went around London to markets like Camden Town market , Portobello market, museums like horniman and natural history which I loved because there was a lot of natural objects like coral reefs that had a lot of texture and patterns that I was inspired by and in the horniman museum were a lot of historical object that had patterns or interesting colours and gardens which was great for colours , texture and patterns.
In my drawings, I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different techniques and materials, which has helped me create a unique vibe. Using oil pastels and chalk pastels allows me to play with a vibrant range of colours that pop while still feeling soft and inviting. I love how the chalk pastels blend, contrasting nicely with the boldness of the oil pastels, making my pieces engaging to look at.
Also using pen markers with colouring pencil and oil pastel was a great idea as there’s different thickness of marks and creating different textures on to my drawings
This was great as I was focusing on Colours and patterns and I think I achieved it however I think I could’ve used different texture of backgrounds as I was mostly using white cartridge paper.
That could be given me more life to my drawings as there would been texture, 3d and shape.
When I add coloured pencils, it gives me the chance to add detail and make certain parts stand out even more. Contrasting with the oil pastels and creating layers. I also like using dry brushes for mark making.
It creates cool textures that bring my drawings to life. Each layer feels like it has its own personality and stands out as its forming layers in different colours and patterns.

Feedback from Nanami Maedea
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your work, these are fantastic.
I strongly feel that your strength is the use of colours in your work. I think the combination of vivid colours gave the images strong contrast and made them look powerful. The effective use of colours allows you to develop your drawing style, which brings a unique and energetic atmosphere to each work. Alongside the drawing style, I was impressed by how you zoomed in and zoomed out things to focus on the texture and pattern. It was interesting to observe how you looked at things and tried to visualise them. I like how you explored the theme and objects for drawings to interpret and describe through your worldview.
I can see that you often used oil pastels and pens for the works. I would suggest you combine those drawing kits to enhance your drawings. That might allow you to visualise the textures, surfaces or any other interesting features of the objects more uniquely. Also, by doing this, you might find more drawing techniques as well. Works created by Jean-Michel Basquiat might be some of the most interesting art to look at. He painted the canvas and drew over them with pastels and pens. You can maybe look for more mixed medium art at Tate Modern’s website. Looking through such places is sure to inspire you in many ways. I think zooming in more on the photos to look at things on a surface level and drawing more abstractly would be good for you. It must be helpful to explore how you can visualise things while reflecting your aesthetic in your drawings.
